Catastrophic Silo Failure in Ohio

January 24, 2018

Sam Sutherly, an Ohio farmer, received a phone call no silo owner wants to hear. His grain silo, containing around 365,000 bushels of corn worth over $1.25 million had collapsed. The collapse caused extensive damage to surrounding buildings, blew electrical transformers, and closed Route 571. Reports indicate 20% of the corn will be lost.

The silo was constructed in 1968. Like many silos and bins, normal wear and tear had obviously taken a toll. While the cause of the collapse has not been reported, the only way to prevent an occurrence like this is to have your silos and bins inspected regularly and repaired when necessary.
